The Wombles Off To Wembley!

The Wombles Off To Wembley!

It was another night to remember, having won the first leg 1-0 in 90th minute at Kingsmeadow, the return leg had even more drama to offer.

It was lively game which saw Accrington Stanley score goals either side of the half to take them ahead 2-1 on aggregate. AFC Wimbledon got back into the game after a cross from Fuller on the right hand side found the leaping Akinfenwa in the box, a powered header on 68 mins, was enough to take the game to extra time.

AFC Wimbledon started extra-time in determined mood to ensure that no penalties would be required, which came with an extra-time goal from Lyle Taylor to earned a first visit to Wembley for Wimbledon in a competitive match since the club was reformed – and it was fully deserved after a thrilling fightback. The game was even temporarily halted during extra time due to broken floodlights, AFC Wimbledon managed to see the game out to go through to the final.

This will be The Dons, first competitive trip to the national stadium since Wimbledon's famous FA Cup win over Liverpool in 1988.

We’d like to wish everyone at AFC Wimbledon all the very best ahead of their Football League, League 2 play-off final against Plymouth Argyle.
